Trapped in a bubble

We were taught since young,

boys don’t play with barbies,

and girls don’t go about with cars.

Study with all your might,

our parents repeated,

as that was the only path we could afford to go.

A successful university degree,

a five digit income,

because money could buy you everything.

Now my life is perfect,

everything my parents ever hoped for.

Surrounded by luxuries and company,

yet I still feel hollow on the inside.

Money was not as great as it seemed,

this realization struck me too late.

Would it be possible to turn back time?

Could we go back to how things used to be?

Before we played the puppets’ of our parents,

before we learnt that the only road to success was wealth,

before we were trapped in a bubble.
